Getting a New Roof? We’ll Remove and Reinstall Your Solar Panels.
A licensed electrical contractor handles the solar side of your reroof from start to finish: safe removal, storage, reinstall with new mount flashing, and recommissioning. We work on your roofer’s schedule.
Send your panel count and roof type (a photo helps) for a free per-panel quote. CSLB Lic. #1054997 (C-10).
We handle the solar. Your roofer handles the roof.
Most roofers don’t touch solar, and they shouldn’t. Disconnecting, removing and reconnecting a grid-tied solar system is electrical work. Maynard Electric Inc. coordinates directly with your roofing contractor, so the panels come off right before the tear-off and go back on as soon as the new roof is ready.
Don’t have a roofer yet? Hire any licensed roofing contractor you trust.
How It Works
- Quote: Send your panel count, roof type and a photo. You get a free written per-panel quote after a quick photo review.
- Pre-removal check: Before anything comes off, we test and document the system’s production, so you know it worked before and works after.
- Removal: We safely shut down and disconnect the system, then remove the panels, racking and wiring and label everything.
- Storage: Panels are stored safely while your roofer works. We’ll confirm storage details in your quote.
- Reinstall: Once the new roof is on, we reinstall the racking with new flashing at every mount, then reinstall the panels and reconnect the wiring.
- Recommission & verify: We restart the system, confirm production and monitoring, and give you before/after documentation.

- Roof pitch and access
- System type (microinverters vs string inverter)
- Optional add-ons like critter guard or inverter replacement
You get a written quote before any work starts. Call (619) 768-3393 or send the form below.
Insurance-claim reroof? We provide an itemized estimate your adjuster can read. Coverage is up to your insurer.
Tile, Shingle or Flat Roofs
- Tile roofs: common across San Diego County. Tiles can crack during solar removal, so we agree on tile handling and replacement tiles with you and your roofer before work starts.
- Comp shingle: standard removal and reinstall with new flashing at every mount.
- Flat/low-slope: ballasted or attached racking, coordinated with your roofer’s membrane work.
Leased or PPA System?
If your solar is leased or under a PPA, the system owner (for example SunStrong Management for original SunPower leases, or the company servicing your Sunnova agreement) usually must approve or arrange removal, and some require their own contractor. Contact them first. If they authorize an independent licensed contractor, we’re happy to help.

Removal & Reinstall FAQ
Do solar panels have to be removed for a new roof?
Yes, for a full reroof. The roofer needs the panels and racking off to replace the underlayment and roofing under the array. For a small leak repair, sometimes only part of the array has to come off.
How long will my panels be off the roof?
Usually as long as your roofer’s job takes. We’ll give you time estimates for removal and reinstall in your quote. Your system won’t produce power while it’s off, so we schedule tightly with your roofer to keep the downtime short.
How much does it cost to remove and reinstall solar panels?
We price per panel based on roof type, pitch and access. Tile and steep roofs cost more. Send your panel count and roof type (a photo helps) for a free written quote.
Can my roofer remove the solar panels?
Disconnecting and reconnecting a grid-tied solar system is electrical work that requires the appropriate contractor license. Many roofers subcontract the solar part to an electrical or solar contractor, and that’s the part we handle.
Will my system still work, and will I keep my net-metering plan?
We test production before removal and after reinstall. Reinstalling the same equipment generally keeps your existing SDG&E net-metering arrangement. If you add panels or change equipment, we’ll explain any interconnection impact first.
Do I need a permit to remove and reinstall solar panels?
It depends on the city. Some San Diego County jurisdictions require a permit for solar removal and reinstall. We check your city’s requirements and pull permits when needed.
